A computer fan doesnt necessarily have to be used in computing. A computer fan can be used as an desk fan or be used to cool down gaming consoles for additional cooling. Once you have a computer fan and you know what you want to do with it, you need to find a power source to make it work. You could use a 9 volt battery, but it will not work for long and will die out. In this case, using a mobile phone charger is the best option. It will provide constant voltage because it is plugged into the mains socket and will never fail. Most phone chargers are rated around 5-8 volts, this is sufficient enough to get the fan blades moving. You could use an DC adapter rated at the full 12 volts, if you want to gain maximum speed the fan is capable of producing.
1) Cut of the connector found on the mobile phone charger. Get a Scissor or a Wire Cutter and snip of the connector, found at the end of the cable. Dont snap it of from the middle of the cable because this will shorten the length of the wire, limiting how far you can go from the mains socket.
2) Remove the plastic insulation. Using a Wire Stripper tool, remove about 3 cm of plastic insulation from the end of the wire. Inside you will find two more small wires, remove about 1.5 cm of plastic insulation from both wires.
3) One wire will be Red color, which is represented as Positive and other wire be Black, which is represented as Negative. You will notice that the computer fan will also have the same color wires. What you need to is connect them together, following color coordination. So twist the copper braids of both wires of the same color together to make the connections. Then use PVC electrical tape to cover up the exposed connections to prevent a short circuit.
4) Now that the connections are all made, plug in the mobile phone charger into a wall socket and switch it on. If everything is done correctly, the PC fan will be functioning and blowing out cold air.
